Diagnostics
At NMJ Service Centre, we have access to dealer-level Xentry (Mercedes), Ista (BMW), and ODIS (VW Group) diagnostics, giving us full access to fault codes, live data, and system information across a wide range of vehicles.
We don’t guess. We find the cause, explain it clearly, and recommend the right fix.
A warning light on the dashboard rarely tells you exactly what’s wrong – it tells you something needs investigating. Accurate diagnostics is the difference between fixing the actual problem and replacing parts that didn’t need replacing.
Pulling a fault code is the starting point, not the conclusion. Our technicians interpret what the data is actually telling them – cross-referencing symptoms, live readings, and known issues for the vehicle – before making any recommendation. It’s a more thorough approach, and it saves our customers money in the long run.
Here are some questions that we’re often asked about diagnostic testing. If you don’t see the answer to yours, just give us a call on 01525 222 224 and we’ll be happy to help and advise.
It depends. A steady engine management light usually means the car has detected a fault but isn’t in immediate danger so you can generally drive carefully to get it checked, but you shouldn’t ignore it or leave it indefinitely. If the light is flashing, or if you notice a loss of power, unusual smells, or rough running, stop safely and call us. A flashing light usually means something more urgent is happening.
Your car’s computer continuously monitors dozens of systems and logs a fault code whenever something falls outside the normal range. A diagnostic check reads those codes using specialist equipment, giving us a precise starting point for finding the fault. Without it, fault-finding on a modern vehicle is guesswork, but with it, we know where to look.
A flashing DPF warning means the diesel particulate filter has become blocked and hasn’t been able to clear itself through normal driving. Don’t ignore it. Continuing to drive can cause serious damage. Bring the car to us and we’ll carry out a diagnostic check to assess the filter’s condition and advise on the right course of action whether that’s a regeneration or something more involved.
Yes. Warning lights appear because the car has detected something outside its normal parameters, even if you haven’t noticed a change in how it drives. Some faults are minor, but others can develop into something more costly if left. A diagnostic check gives you the information to make a sensible decision, rather than hoping for the best.
We use the Mercedes-Benz Xentry diagnostic tool for Mercedes vehicles, and have access to ODIS and BMW ISTA for VW Group and BMW models respectively – the same systems the dealer networks use. For other makes, we use professional-grade multi-brand diagnostic equipment. If you’re not sure whether we can help with your specific vehicle, just call us.
Both RAC Approved and IMI-affiliated, NMJ Service Centre is held to independently verified standards of technical competence and customer care, so you know you can book with confidence.
