Air Conditioning
If your air conditioning isn’t cooling properly, it’s usually a sign the system needs attention.
Loss of refrigerant, internal contamination, or failing components can all affect performance. At NMJ Service Centre, we carry out air conditioning servicing with accuracy and care, using equipment designed to restore the system properly – not just top it up.
We are F-gas certified and service both R134a and R1234yf systems, ensuring your vehicle receives the correct refrigerant. A standard service includes refrigerant recovery, vacuum testing, and a precise recharge to manufacturer specifications.
Drivers often ask us what happens when the system has developed a fault. In these cases, we go further by using specialist flushing equipment to thoroughly clean the system. This process removes contaminants such as debris and degraded oil, which can circulate through the system and cause ongoing issues.
Flushing is particularly important when components like compressors fail. Without it, contaminants can damage new parts and lead to repeat faults. By fully cleaning the system, we help protect the compressor and ensure the air conditioning operates efficiently and reliably over the long term.
If leaks or faults are identified, we explain everything clearly before carrying out any additional work. The focus is always on fixing the issue properly, not applying a temporary solution.
A well-maintained air conditioning system improves comfort, supports effective demisting, and keeps your vehicle performing as it should in all conditions.
Here are some questions that we’re often asked about car air con. If you don’t see the answer to yours, just give us a call on 01525 222 224 and we’ll be happy to help and advise.
The most common cause is low refrigerant, which depletes naturally over time even in a fully functioning system. A regas, which removes the old refrigerant, checks for leaks, and recharges the system, usually sorts it out. If the system has lost refrigerant faster than expected, there may be a leak that needs finding first. We’ll check both before recommending anything.
Most manufacturers suggest every two years. Refrigerant levels drop gradually regardless of use – typically around 10–15% per year – so even an air con that seems to be working may be running well below where it should be. Staying on top of it keeps the system efficient and avoids the sharper cost of repairs further down the line.
No, a musty or unpleasant smell usually means that there’s bacteria or mould building up in the system, often in the cabin filter or on the evaporator. It’s a common problem, particularly if the air con hasn’t been used regularly. An antibacterial treatment will usually clear it. If the smell is more like burning or chemicals, get it checked promptly as that can indicate something more serious.
It adds a small load to the engine, yes, but a properly charged air con system is far more efficient than one struggling with low refrigerant. Keeping the system in good condition is better for your fuel consumption than running it in a depleted state.
Yes, absolutely. We hold FGas certification alongside our IMI Level 4 EV qualifications, so we’re properly equipped to work on air conditioning and thermal management systems on hybrid and electric vehicles, not just conventional ones. This includes Tesla and other premium EV models.
Both RAC Approved and IMI-affiliated, NMJ Service Centre is held to independently verified standards of technical competence and customer care, so you know you can book with confidence.
