Brakes
Brakes are one of the most important safety systems on your vehicle. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth getting checked. At NMJ Service Centre, brake inspections are thorough and straightforward.
If you notice squealing, grinding, or reduced stopping power, these are clear signs that attention is needed, so do get in touch with our team. At our workshop in Milton Keynes, we assess pads, discs, callipers, and fluid condition to ensure everything is working as it should. We use quality, original equipment parts where required, ensuring reliable performance without the inflated costs often associated with main dealers.
Brake work at NMJ Service Centre is never rushed. Each component is checked properly, and any issues are explained clearly before repairs are carried out. And if additional faults are identified, such as sticking callipers or uneven wear, we address these at the same time to prevent recurring problems.
Modern braking systems can also involve sensors and electronic components. With dealer-level diagnostics, we can handle these systems accurately and efficiently.
Reliable brakes give you confidence every time you drive. Proper maintenance ensures consistent performance in all conditions.
Here are some questions that we’re often asked about brakes. If you don’t see the answer to yours, just give us a call on 01525 222 224 and we’ll be happy to help and advise.
Squealing when you brake is often the wear indicator on your brake pads doing exactly what it’s designed to do – telling you the pads are getting low. It doesn’t always mean they’ve run out, but it does mean they need inspecting soon so don’t leave it. If the noise becomes a grinding sound, the pads have worn through and damage to the discs is likely already happening.
A grinding sensation usually means metal-on-metal contact, in other words, the pads have worn through and are cutting into the discs. At that point the braking efficiency is significantly reduced and the repair cost increases quickly. We’d recommend getting it looked at as soon as possible rather than continuing to drive on it.
A soft or spongy pedal is often a sign of air or moisture in the brake fluid, or in more serious cases, an issue with the master cylinder or a brake line. Either way, it’s something to have checked promptly because braking performance that feels inconsistent or vague isn’t something to drive around on for long.
Worn, scored, or warped discs don’t always make themselves obvious until the problem is advanced. During a brake inspection we’ll measure the disc thickness, check for scoring, and assess whether they’re within safe limits. We’ll only recommend replacement if it’s genuinely needed – we won’t suggest new discs just because the pads are being changed.
Most manufacturers recommend every two years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point meaning that under heavy braking it can begin to vaporise, causing that spongy pedal feeling. It’s one of the most overlooked maintenance items on a car, and one of the more straightforward ones to stay on top of.
Both RAC Approved and IMI-affiliated, NMJ Service Centre is held to independently verified standards of technical competence and customer care, so you know you can book with confidence.
